Escrito por Skyler Larrimore | 30 julio 2010

Last August, the Circle of Service Foundation awarded Erie House a $20,000 challenge grant for our Technology Promoters program.  For every $1 of donations we receive from new private donors and current donors specifically in support of Tech Promoters, Circle of Service will award $1. To date, we have raised $19,555.

We need to raise only $445 more by Sunday, August 1st to receive our full $20,000 challenge grant. YOU CAN HELP!

About Technology Promoters:

The Erie House Technology Promoters program empowers adults in our low-income community with technology skills and the opportunity to share their new knowledge with peers as computer literacy teachers.

This project began in 1999 in response to the demands of students from Erie’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED preparation classes.  Erie opened our first CTC in 1995, and in response to a huge demand for computer classes, a creative solution was reached. Erie’s Technology Services Director would teach technology, teaching and leadership skills to a cohort of adults at no cost, with the understanding that these students would go on to support open access time in our technology centers and teach computer skills to their peers.

In addition to having the computer skills to take on more challenging positions in the workplace and advance their careers, many graduates leave the program with the ability to make a difference in their communities. In addition to teaching basic computing skills related to using software, keyboarding, emailing and internet browsers, the program also covers topics such as self-esteem, personal responsibility, conflict resolution, problem solving and public speaking.

Since 1999, more than 2,800 individuals have completed our Technology Promoters program and graduates have taught computer literacy to thousands of their peers.  In addition, promoters have completed tens of thousands of volunteer hours in our CTCs (Community Technology Centers). The trilingual (English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese) Technology Promoters curriculum, created at Erie House, has been distributed to more than 60 community-based organizations throughout Chicago. This vibrant program recently expanded to Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood.
