Erie Brightens the Holidays for Families

Saturday, December 13th, Erie held its annual Holiday with Hearts Bazaar which benefitted children in Erie's programs - from infants and toddlers, children in our After School and youth programs, as well as families who receive assistance in our Emergency Services program. Erie handed out over 1,000 gifts to needy families through the generosity of our many partners, including corporations and churches. Read »
Northern Trust Bank gathers over 500 books for Erie programs

Spearheaded by Erie Board Member and Northern Trust employee John Van Pelt, the Northern Trust gathered over 500 books for use in all Erie programs from preschool to English as a Second Language courses. The Northern Trust Bank, has been a valued supporter since partnering with Erie in 1984 to create our hallmark youth mentoring program (TEAM), the Northern Trust continues to invest in the Erie community. Erie's TEAM program recieves $7,500 grant from the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Program

Erie's TEAM program was among the twenty-seven outstanding tutor/mentor programs that were awarded at the annual Grant Reception of the Sun-Times Judge Marovitz Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Program (LAH) on Wednesday, December 17 at the Chicago Bar Association (CBA). A total of $217,000 in grants were awarded at the Grant Reception. The CBA originated the program to impact the lives of underprivileged youth through tutor/mentor programs, and the program benefited from receiving substantial funds from the late Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz and The Chicago Sun-Times. Erie House and Enlace Chicago launch $4 million capital campaign to benefit new Little Village Community Center at Erie’s Annual Awards Dinner

On November 5th, at Erie’s 2008 Future of Promise/Futuro de Promesa Annual Awards Dinner, Erie House, in partnership with Enlace Chicago, launched a $4 million dollar capital campaign to create the Little Village Community Center. Responding to a challenge to raise $50,000 for the Little Village Community Center project, guests at the event donated an impressive total of $50,000 in response, with $100,000 going towards the project by the end of the evening. Erie House will soon be expanding its resources in the Little Village (South Lawndale) Community in partnership with Enlace Chicago. Currently Erie House offers English as a Second Language (ESL), leadership training and Technology classes at a rented space in Little Village. Read »
Comcast Cares for Erie Kids

On November 20th, Erie House will honor the Comcast Foundation for their continued support by hosting “Things We Are Thankful For”, a dinner with children and families in Erie’s After School Program. The Comcast Foundation recently granted $20,000 to the “Partners for Reading” initiative in Erie’s After School Program. With this grant, Erie was able to purchase new computers and literacy software that will help children struggling with reading improve their skills. Comcast also hosted an event at Erie House on May 3rd, “Comcast Cares Day”, where Comcast employees led a teddy bear making activity. Erie After School children made teddy bears to take home and for needy children in Erie’s Family Child Care Homes program. After the teddy bear making activity, volunteers read to children. Read »
Immigrant voting push strong

During the last three months, immigrant groups in Illinois have registered about 24,000 new voters, part of an aggressive last push to influence next month's elections. Although the subject of Immigration has barely been broached by either presidential candidate, frustrations with the system are spurring registration drives in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere that have seen nearly half a million new voters registered by immigrant groups in 12 states. Erie Participates in Equal Voices for America's Families Convention

On September 6th, members of the Erie community were among 15,000 families from around the country that led a national call to action at the Equal Voices for America's Families Convention. The event was held simultaneously in Chicago, Birmingham and Los Angeles, and was simulcast live. The convention was a call to lawmakers and the next President of the United States to adopt a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues and challenges faced by low income, working families. Get Out the Vote!

On Thursday, October 2nd, Erie hosted a press conference with Aldermen Manny Flores, Walter Burnett and Rey Colon to discuss the importance of voting and participation in the democratic process. Erie believes that everyone's voice should be heard and that everyone eligible should vote. The heart of Erie's mission is the idea that community empowerment results from education and civic engagement. All of Erie's programs work towards these goals, particularly our citizenship and advocacy programs. As the election draws near, Erie staff and volunteers are working hard to ensure that all new U.S. citizens are registered to vote and understand the democratic process. Read »

Erie House Benefits from the "Big Give Wedding"

Inspired by Oprah’s Big Give television show, where contestants had to “give big or go home,” Chicago residents, Mary Murphy and Victor Quintanilla are teaming up with their wedding guests and the community to throw a “Big Give Wedding” this September. In lieu of all wedding registries and gifts, they are supporting needy children by raising funds for the Erie Neighborhood House and Greater Chicago Food Depository’s Nourish for Knowledge program. Creating Community at Goose Island Brewery

Hosted by the newly formed Erie Associates Board and generously sponsored by Goose Island Brewery, over 200 people attended the Learn. Lead. Create Community at Goose Island Brewery event on Thursday, June 26th. Almost $3,000 was raised from the event for a fund to help individuals and families who want to become United States citizens but cannot afford the $675 application fee. Read »
Erie's Preschool Program One of the First to Earn NAEYC Accrediation Under New System

Erie’s preschool program has just been reaccredited under a new system by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for the next five years. Accreditation by NAEYC provides a seal of quality for a program and is a symbol of recognition for the commitment to reaching the highest professional standards in the world of children’s education. Only 8 percent of all preschool and other early childhood programs are NAEYC-accredited. Erie’s program received an outstanding rating of 94% or higher for each of the six classes that were evaluated. Read »

Erie's Director of Head Start Louis Falk Wins Jumpstart's Flare Award

JUMPSTART PRESS RELEASE: Jumpstart’s Central Region would like to congratulate Mr. Louis Falk, winner of the 2008 Flare Award. Introduced in 2005, this award is for Jumpstart Corps members to recognize a figure who shares Jumpstart’s commitment to helping at-risk children and communities prepare for a successful future. Coincidentally, the inaugural winner of the Flare Award is Ms. Grace Clear, who works with Mr. Falk at Erie House, but won the Flare Award while working for a Jumpstart partner in Dearborn, Michigan. "NCLB Tutoring Outside The Box" Features Erie's after-school program

Thanks to the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Eduardo is one of 530,000 poor children nationwide from struggling schools who receive tutoring paid for under the law’s Title I program. Unlike most other tutoring sessions under the law, the one with Eduardo and 12 others at Erie House isn’t happening in a school building or at a corporate tutoring outlet. Those types of providers serve the vast majority of the students receiving tutoring—also known as supplementary educational services, or SES—under the federal law. Read »

On Saturday March 29, over 50 Erie House participants joined with more than 400 working-class people from diverse backgrounds at the Chicago Equal Voices for America’s Families Town Hall meeting, sponsored by the Marguerite Casey Foundation. Representing fourteen diverse community-based organizations from throughout Chicago, participants shared their personal stories and experiences on the issues of health care, public safety, and immigration at the meeting.
