Fair Extends Wellness Resources to the Little Village Community
June 29, 2015 | Chicago, IL
Members of the community found access to resources from more than 30 organizations.
The fourth annual My Wellness, Our Community fair took place in Little Village on Friday, June 26th, delivering an array of health and wellness information, resources and workshops to community residents.
Unseasonably cool summer weather and scattered showers didn’t curb enthusiasm for the day’s activities, as a steady flow of foot traffic visited the 4200 block of W. 25th St during the fair.
Erie House Little Village site coordinator Cristina De La Rosa was pleased with the event. “It’s great to see neighborhood residents come together with a common goal in mind,” she said. “This is how we can build a stronger, healthier community in Little Village.
Vendors at the fair offered many basic resources and information, but community residents could also take advantage of a variety of free on-site services. Family dentistry practice Shining Smiles, for example, offered free dental cleanings and screenings for children. Children were able to take a test spin on a rehabbed bike, courtesy of Working Bikes, and families received information about the large inventory of bicycles the nonprofit cooperative distributes to the community at low cost.
In addition, workshops with topics ranging from discerning food labels to achieving financial wellbeing equipped participants with knowledge for pursuing holistic wellness.
“We want to remind the Little Village community about the free high-quality services Erie House provides,” explains De La Rosa. “But if we cannot provide a particular service, families will also know that we have a wide network of partners that offer a variety of services.”
De La Rosa says Erie House will plan to team up with community partners again next year for the fifth annual My Wellness, Our Community fair. To view photos from this year’s wellness fair, please visit Erie Neighborhood House on Facebook.
