Letitia started working at Erie House 16 years ago with the opening of 1701 W. Superior. She has grown with Erie since then, acquiring a Bachelor’s degree, an Infant/Toddler Care certificate from the Erikson Institute, and now preparing for a graduate program. When asked what has kept her at Erie, she responds, “[my] commitment to serving children and families that don’t have a lot of resources and avenues of support.”
Letitia has always been involved at Erie beyond her role as a teacher. While serving as Lead Teacher in the Pine Tree room, she also helps plan 4-5 activities per year for staff—so that they feel encouraged and appreciated for their hard work. Letitia has volunteered her time in planning for Holidays with Heart, Erie’s annual year-end gift drive for children. The gift drive is a special time because it allows her to see parents and share their excitement as they wrap gifts for their children. Letitia also serves on the All-Staff Retreat Planning Committee. She feels moved to engage staff in events that show that they are valued and she encourages them to visit the classroom as well.
Honoring her dedication to Erie, Letitia was recipient of the “Staff of the Year Award” in June. Maria Perez, Director of Human Resources, presented the award and said, “It isn’t easy working 8 hours a day in a classroom with 2 year olds and [Letitia] has found a way to make it all worthwhile.” Letitia says that “richness comes in relationships” and she is grateful that Erie has provided a place for her to grow in understanding, working with as a team with other teachers, and being reminded of how others may feel when they are in the minority.
In her time, Letitia notes that the administration at Erie has pushed for teacher education, empowering them so that they may in turn empower families. She is grateful for the relationships that have enabled her to grow, further enabling her to improve as a teacher and a person.
Letitia, thank you for your work and devotion to the Erie family!
