Erie Associate Board Appoints New Leadership
September 1, 2014 | Chicago, IL
The Erie Associate Board (EAB) appointed Joseluis Avalos as their new president during an August meeting. Avalos replaces outgoing president Carlos Ramirez; Rachel Weisberg will become the new vice president, and Elliott Soto will remain treasurer.
Now a program development coordinator for the Chicago Department of Health, Avalos first encountered Erie House as a master’s level social work intern in the Youth Options Unlimited (YOU) program at Erie. He describes the experience as transformative. “I truly feel Erie is part of my extended family,” he says, “and, as family, they have always welcomed me with open arms.”
Avalos has remained connected to Erie House ever since, most recently serving the Erie Associate Board as vice president. “The word inclusive (in Erie’s mission statement) is a strong testament to the importance Erie places on intentionally including and empowering people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized.”
For Ramirez, his term as EAB president was memorable. “I really enjoyed when we rented out an ice rink for Erie House and skated around with all the kids,” he recalls. “It was fun racing with the little kids and giving other not-so-great skaters some tips.” Ramirez also remembers standing in for Erie House Board of Directors president John DeCarrier to give remarks at a staff appreciation dinner. “It was nice to see all the people that make Erie really run—and run great—and also to be able to say thank you for all the hard work they do.”
Ramirez will continue to remain an active member of the EAB; he will also be a TEAM mentor again this academic year. “I have learned that once you become involved with Erie, it is really hard to stop,” he says. “Why would you want to?”
Tasked with raising financial support and serving as advocates for the mission of Erie House within the community, members of the EAB play a vital role in the life of the organization. To this end, the Associate Board fundraises for Erie House in a variety of ways, including planning events such as the annual Goose Island Fundraiser and a tequila tasting happy hour.
