ON ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF DACA, COMMUNITY THANKS SENATOR DICK DURBIN FOR CHAMPIONING COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM
Chicago Nonprofit to Honor Senator’s Unwavering Stance for Immigration Reform
WHAT: Over 100 people from leading Illinois Latino civic, business, and community organizations will thank U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) for his steadfast commitment to DREAMers and his leadership in passing comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate at an event sponsored by Erie Neighborhood House.
Senator Durbin is the original author of the “DREAM” Act, which provides promising undocumented youth with a pathway to legal status. One year ago today, President Obama’s executive order on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals—modeled on Senator Durbin’s DREAM Act—went into effect.
Senator Durbin has been the driving force behind many positive developments in immigration reform over the last several years, including encouraging the Obama Administration to extend temporary legal status to DREAMers and working with the bipartisan “Group of Eight” to pass immigration reform in the Senate.
As the demographic and economic landscapes have shifted, Erie Neighborhood House has served as a stalwart in the immigrant community. Beginning with the Ukrainian diaspora at the turn of the 20th century to today's vibrant Mexican community, Erie's commitment to service for the immigrant community has never wavered. Erie House will welcome the Senator as a champion of hope for the immigrant community and DREAMers.
Erie Neighborhood House is deeply committed to keeping families together and believes that the family is the sacred unit of our society. We work as advocates for the type of immigration reform that unites families and creates a path to citizenship. This will undoubtedly assist many unauthorized immigrants within our families and communities.
The Senator’s bipartisan work brings hope to our families, communities, and the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country.
