Mathematics and Reading Instructor (Part-Time)

Erie Neighborhood House, a progressive social service agency serving the Chicago metropolitan area and dedicated to promoting a just and inclusive society, is seeking a part-time mathematics and reading instructor to teach the Workforce Development department’s pre-certification program. The pre-certification program consists of providing math, reading and writing instruction with each course contextualized to either healthcare or supply chain management and logistics industry. The instructor reports to the Education and Training Coordinator. The Instructor’s basic job functions are to provide instruction in math, reading and writing courses to post-secondary education learners ranging on average from 5.0--10.0 grade level equivalents.

Position Responsibilities


  • Teach on average 20-30 hours a week – subject to change during the year
  • Hold office hours for 1 hour each session, 2 days a week
  • Teach adults and youth 17 years and up basic math (foundational level through basic algebra and geometry), reading (strategies and comprehension), and writing (basic grammar, essays, professional, and informal) with the goal of increasing their grade level equivalency by 2 grade levels
  • Teach topics related to career exploration, skills and goals identification, presentation and marketing skills 
  • Prepare for classes by reading lesson plans, prepping class materials, and setting up the classroom prior to the beginning of class
  • Track participants’ progress and success through formative, summative and standardized assessments
  • Provide an inclusive, encouraging and safe learning environment; Use research-based teaching practices, including interactive learning, to ensure that every participant is engaged, challenged, and learning successfully
  • Communicate participants’ issues, concerns, success and interests to the Workforce Development department weekly
  • Create and maintain a course syllabus with daily lesson plans that are appropriate to the objectives of the course and submit lesson plan feedback to the Education and Training Coordinator 
  • Perform other teaching duties as necessary


  • Track attendance daily; Input attendance records weekly by using department approved software system
  • Document participants’ outcomes and successes
  • Check emails on a daily basis; Reply to Workforce Development team emails within 48 hours
  • Attend Workforce Development meetings: one-on-one meetings, instructor team meetings, Workforce team meetings
  • Perform other administrative duties as necessary 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or related Liberal Arts and Science major required
  • Minimum two years teaching experience with preference for candidates who taught in a high school environment 
  • Previous experience working with English language learners preferred
  • Experience with creating lesson plans and implementing academic curricula 
  • Strong communication skills and effective presentation skills required. Commitment to social justice and sensitivity to challenges of the Latino and immigrant communities
  • Flexible work schedule with the ability to work daytime or evening hours 
  • Excellent organizational skills; professionalism; ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail; ability to work independently as well as work effectively with a team
  • Ability to work and travel between various teaching sites
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
