Statement from ENH on Recent ICE-Involved Deaths
Chicago – January 26th, 2026
The deaths of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Jeffery Pretti—both U.S. citizens—calls us to action. These tragedies have shaken communities across the country and here in Chicago, reminding us that when federal agencies operate without transparency or accountability, everyone’s safety and constitutional rights are at risk.
This isn’t the first time over our 155-year legacy that we have faced uncertain times for immigrants in our city. We’ve stood alongside immigrant families then, and we stand with them today, and we know this truth: fear has no place in our communities. Our power lies in coming together—choosing care over chaos, and action over silence.
Across the country, we’re seeing communities respond with courage. In Minneapolis and cities nationwide, neighbors are practicing their constitutional rights and , demanding accountability. People are unifying together and demonstrating the power of the people is stronger than ever. This is what democracy looks like when people choose to protect each other.
We know many in our community are feeling afraid right now, worried about going to work, taking their children to school, or simply living their daily lives. That fear is real, and so is our commitment to keeping you informed and protected.
We call on our communities to take action:
Know your rights and stay informed.
Erie House offers free Know Your Rights workshops and legal consultations. Understanding your constitutional rights is one of the most powerful tools you have. Practice safe actions and remember to stay two arm lengths of distance when recording. Erie House and our partner organizations provide legal defense, Know Your Rights workshops, and direct support to families navigating these challenging times. We’re stronger together.
Stand up for constitutional rights.
Contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on the DHS funding bill. Your voice matters, and elected officials need to hear from you.
Organize locally.
Join or support rapid response networks in Chicago. Sign petitions that demand accountability and protection for community members, like the petition calling for the release of Federico Alexis Alcantar from ICE detention at the Chicago Field Office.
We will continue to advocate for change and empower our communities with the tools, resources, and support needed to thrive—no matter what challenges we face. Together, we build powerful communities where everyone can live with dignity and without fear.
